Main Street and Mill Lane have Georgian and Victorian properties where later extensions have been added, meaning original lead-and-brass supply lines have been tee-jointed into modern kitchens and utilities — those joins are where a lot of slow leaks show up. Merchant villas built when wealthy Hull families moved out in the 18th and 19th centuries often have long copper runs under suspended ground floors, and pinhole leaks there rot skirting long before anyone notices. The 1970s and 80s streets have first-generation copper due for attention; the newer West Leys homes have plastic push-fit that is quick to work on. Hard chalk-aquifer water across HU14 wears taps and fill valves faster than most people expect, and it is the main reason a shower-mixer cartridge does not last as long here as the label suggests.
